Every relationship, romantic or not, goes through periods of emotional turmoil, of ups and downs, of gain and loss. Relationships should NOT be dependent on the emotional state of either party because if that was the case, then as soon as a wife or husband is faced with loss or emotional distress, the marriage would end.

Relationships, especially romantic ones, are all about working through conflict, individual or not, together as a team. When a wife loses a family member to death, the spouse comes alongside her and is there for her as a friend if she needs, as a lover. But no matter what particular phase the spouses are going through, they’re still in an exclusive relationship even if the lovey-dovey touchy-feely stuff isn’t there.

Why shouldn’t that be any different for Damon and Elena? Why can’t they be together in a romantic, exclusive relationship in which they’re supporting each other emotionally? The physical romantic stuff doesn’t need to be present at every stage in their relationship, but Elena sure as hell could call Damon her boyfriend and still be in love with him even though she’s devastated by the loss of Jeremy. Every relationship should be founded on friendship, and there’s no reason why Damon and Elena shouldn’t be in an exclusive relationship because Elena or Damon are scarred. There is nothing wrong with Elena leaning on Damon or Damon leaning on Elena or both of them as an exclusive team helping each other and working through their issues.
